Forget where I got this from, but it's definitely something for the bookmarks: Online Etymology.

I was wondering if anyone has any clue as to the background for the word "turtledove." I want to know where Wnglish got the word from, other than the Bible. I've been doing some research on Mesoamerican Maya traditions and found that there are avian forms with turtle shells on them, signifying deity.

Any help in this regard would be great.
